Pre-Match Pack: Worcestershire Rapids

Sunday 5th May 2019
Written by Danny Painter

Derbyshire has named a 12-man squad for the final Royal London One-Day Cup group match against Worcestershire Rapids at The Pattonair County Ground on Monday 6 May; 11am start.

Derbyshire will get their first chance to perform in front of the TV cameras, with Sky Sports Cricket set to televise the 50-over game.

Billy Godleman’s side go into the fixture on the back of a defeat to Lancashire, but were five-wicket winners the last time they played in Derby, against Warwickshire.

The captain has been in fine form throughout the competition, hitting a total of 521 runs at an average of 86.83, including three successive centuries.

He will continue at the top of the order alongside Luis Reece, who offers powerful batting and useful left-arm seam bowling.

Wayne Madsen hit an unbeaten 119 last time out in Derby to record his fifth List A century for the club. He provides experience in the middle order, alongside all-rounders Alex Hughes, Matt Critchley and on-loan batsman Tom Lace.

Logan van Beek has picked up seven wickets in the competition so far, the same as fellow pace bowler, Ravi Rampaul. The pair are set to continue leading the seam attack, whereas spinner Mark Watt will be looking to continue the recent form which has seen him pick up four wickets in his last two matches, while he has conceded just 82 runs in his last 18 overs.

Opposition

Worcestershire Rapids arrive at The Pattonair County Ground following a 150-run thrashing of Yorkshire at Blackfinch New Road.

The win leaves them second in the North Group on ten points from their first seven matches.

George Rhodes hit 106, while Ben Cox added 87 and Wayne Parnell claimed 5-25 in a commanding performance.

Parnell is the Rapids’ leading wicket-taker with 17, while Charlie Morris has 10.

Four Worcestershire batsmen have made centuries in the competition so far, including all-rounder Ross Whiteley, who has a high-score of 131 in this year’s Royal London One-Day Cup.

Pre-Match Talk

Billy Godleman heads into the fixture with his usual determination to get the win for Derbyshire, knowing his side can only do their bit and hope results go their way.

Reflecting on the defeat to Lancashire and looking ahead to Worcestershire on Bank Holiday Monday, he praised the performance of Anuj Dal, while he wants to take lessons into the Rapids clash.

He said: “It felt like it got slower and the ball stuck in the pitch more as it went on. Obviously that’s Lancashire’s strength here.

“But the guys tried their hearts out, but to have two runs outs in a run chase makes it much more difficult.

“The way he [Anuj Dal] played the spinner was excellent. He’s played a lot, but maybe not bowled or batted, but I’m really pleased that he got his opportunity today and took it.

“Hopefully the results fall nicely for us, but it’s important that in any game we go out there and try to win and try to learn. It’ll be no different against Worcestershire.”
