Pre-Match Pack: Glamorgan

Monday 10th June 2019
Written by Danny Painter

Sam Conners comes into a 12-man Derbyshire squad for the Specsavers County Championship match away to Glamorgan at Swansea.

Young fast bowler and Cricket Derbyshire Academy in partnership with the University of Derby graduate, Conners comes into the otherwise unchanged squad, in place of Anuj Dal.

Billy Godleman made his first red-ball half-century of the season at Emirates Riverside last week, and is likely to open the batting alongside Luis Reece once again, with Wayne Madsen and Tom Lace completing the top order.

Matt Critchley scored half-centuries in both innings, and took three wickets against Durham, and is likely to keep his place in the side as an option with both bat and ball.

Ravi Ramapaul took eight wickets in the game against Durham, something he also did when Glamorgan visited The Pattonair County Ground last month. He will look to continue his form in Swansea, while sharing the new ball with Tony Palladino.

Opposition

Glamorgan’s form has taken them to second in the Specsavers County Championship Division Two table, and they will be looking to pick up another positive result against Derbyshire.

Marnus Labuschagne has led the way with the bat for Glamorgan this season, scoring 533 runs across nine innings, at an average of 66.62.

Billy Root has also been in-form of late, with the brother of England captain, Joe, hitting 229 as Glamorgan secured an innings victory over Northamptonshire last time out.

Marchant de Lange has taken the most wickets for Glamorgan this season with 16, but he is rested and replaced by former Derbyshire seamer, Graham Wagg. Michael Hogan is expected to lead the attack, having claimed 12 dismissals at an average of 19.75.

Glamorgan squad: David Lloyd (c), Lukas Carey, Kiran Carlson, Tom Cullen (wk), Dan Douthwaite, Charlie Hemphrey, Michael Hogan, Marnus Labuschagne, Owen Morgan, Billy Root, Nick Selman, Graham Wagg.

Pre-Match Talk

Dave Houghton says that Derbyshire’s defeat to Durham should not deter them from playing attractive cricket.

Derbyshire had looked to be in a good position to get something out of the fixture at Emirates Riverside, before four late wickets meant that the hosts claimed the win.

Houghton admits that the defeat was a difficult one one to take, but believes that the style of cricket Derbyshire are playing will get results in the long-run.

“It was never going to be easy, and we lost four wickets in seven balls, so the boys are pretty down but we are playing a really good brand of cricket at the moment,” said Houghton.

“This one didn’t go our way, and it doesn’t feel great losing but we have to make sure that we continue to play this brand of cricket all the time, to give ourselves a lot of chances to win.”
