Pre-Match Pack: Worcestershire

Saturday 6th July 2019
Written by Danny Painter

Wayne Madsen returns to the Derbyshire squad after missing the game against Middlesex through injury.

Madsen is joined in the 13-man squad by Tom Lace, who was unavailable for the Middlesex match due to being on-loan from the side, while Anuj Dal retains his place in the squad after coming in to replace Madsen last time out.

Billy Godleman and Luis Reece will be looking to continue their good form with the bat, after scoring 102 and 96 respectively in the first innings at The Pattonair County Ground.

Leus du Plooy scored 118 and 69 not out in the match, meaning that he now has two centuries and one fifty in his previous three innings across all formats, while Harvey Hosein and Fynn Hudson-Pentice will come into the match off the back of half-centuries against Middlesex.

Tony Palladino, Ravi Rampaul, Logan van Beek and Reece make up Derbyshire’s pace attack, all four bowlers took wickets against Middlesex, as did Matt Critchley and du Plooy.

Opposition

Worcestershire are sixth in the Specsavers County Championship Division Two, having won two of their seven matches and losing the same number.

Ben Cox is the side’s leading run-scorer this season, making 309 runs so far at an average of 38.62 and a top-score of 100 not out, while Riki Wessels, Brett D’Oliveira and Daryl Mitchell have all scored centuries this season.

Hamish Rutherford also has a hundred to his name, although the New Zealand batsman has not featured for the club since making 123 in his sole County Championship innings this season, which came against Leicestershire in April.

With the ball, Charlie Morris leads the way with 26 wickets at an average of 20.69. Joe Leach (17), Josh Tongue (16), Wayne Parnell (14), Ed Barnard (14) and D’Oliveira (10) are all into double-figures for wickets claimed this season.

Pre-Match Talk

Anuj Dal says that Derbyshire’s batting depth is a key strength for the side as they prepare to face Worcestershire at Kidderminster.

Dal hit a career-best 92 against Middlesex, one of seven times that a Derbyshire batsman past 50 in the match, with Billy Godleman and Leus du Plooy both scoring centuries in the match.

Luis Reece, Fynn Hudson-Prentice and Harvey Hosein all hit half-centuries, while Tom Lace and Wayne Madsen have both been named in the squad that will travel to face Worcestershire.

Dal says that Derbyshire’s batting depth is something that gives the team great confidence.

“It is only going to make the squad stronger, when you have got players at eight or nine that can score runs, that is a nightmare for opposition teams,” said Dal.

“It is a brilliant position to be in as a squad, even going into the second team to try and stake your claim, it is nice to know that you are getting those runs behind you and are putting other players under pressure.”
