Heavy rain at Denby CC meant that only 37 overs could be bowled on Day One of Derbyshire Second XI’s Championship fixture versus Lancashire.

Wes Durston captained the side but lost the toss and was asked to bat first. Having recently recovered from a serious back injury, Jonathan Clare opened the batting for Derbyshire alongside Tom Wood, and scored 42 from 78 balls.

The players managed to play throughout much of the morning session but the rain came in the early afternoon and disrupted most of the rest of the day to the point that just 37 overs were bowled in the day.

Clare was the pick of the batsmen for the hosts but there were also scores for Wood (24) and Wayne White (19 not out) as Derbyshire ended the day on 109-6 with Saqib Mahmood returnin

g 4-21 from eight overs.

The rain also affected Day Two at Denby, with no play possible in the morning and afternoon sessions.
