Day Two cut short due to rain

Friday 24th July 2015

Only a session’s play was possible on Day Two of the Bell and Co Tourist Fixture with Australia at The 3aaa County Ground due to persistent rain showers.

Australia had declared overnight on 413-9, but Derbyshire only faced 29 overs of their first innings on Day Two before rain prevented any play after lunch, with the hosts on 81-2.

Ben Slater and Hamish Rutherford opened for Derbyshire together for the first time and made a steady start to add 49 for the first wicket. Rutherford was the first man to go when he drove at a Pat Cummins delivery and feather through to Peter Nevill behind the stumps for 14.

His opening partner Slater was the only other man to fall for the hosts when he was caught by Adam Voges off the bowling of Shane Watson for 20.

Wayne Madsen and Scott Elstone were in at three and four respectively for Derbyshire and batted their side through to lunch on 81-2.

The umpires took the decision to abandon the day’s play at 3pm and to restart tomorrow at the earlier time of 10.30am on Saturday, when Madsen will resume on 14 and Elstone on 13 with their side 322 runs adrift.

As a gesture of good will, supporters in possession of a Day Two ticket for the Bell & Co Tourist Fixture versus Australia can gain admission to the final day on Saturday for just £5, while accompanied juniors with a Day Two ticket can watch the final day at Derby for FREE. Read more HERE
