Ben McDermott captained Hobart Hurricanes to an eight-run victory over Perth Scorchers on Sunday.

The wicketkeeper-batsman scored an unbeaten 20 as Hobart managed 180-2 from their 20 overs, with D’Arcy Short hitting 103 not out, before claiming a catch to dismiss Cameron Bancroft as Perth fell short of the required total.

McDermott is the side’s second-highest run-scorer, with his 131 runs coming at an average of 32.75, including one half-century, while only Short (3) has passed 50 more times than him for Hobart during the competition.

Sean Abbott

Sean Abbott’s strong end to 2019 is yet to carry over into the New Year, with the fast bowler currently sidelined with a side strain, which he picked up while claiming 2-28 for Sydney Sixers against Sydney Thunder.

Injury has meant that Short will replace Abbott for Australia’s upcoming ODI series against India, which will begin later this month.

The bowler has continued travelling with the side while injured and is expected to return to action before the end of the Big Bash season, which has already seen him claim 11 wickets at an average of 13.45.
