Written by Stephen Martin

Leus du Plooy struck 86 on Day One of the Aston Lark Tourist Fixture against Australia at The Pattonair County Ground.

The batsman top-scored as the hosts were dismissed for 172, with Michael Neser (3-31) and Mitchell Starc (3-46) claiming three wickets apiece.

Making his return to The Pattonair County Ground, Usman Khawaja ended the day on 18 not out, while Marcus Harris struck an unbeaten 52 as Australia closed on 77-0, trailing by 95.

Having won the toss and electing to bat, captain Billy Godleman was unable to get off the mark before he was caught by Matthew Wade off Neser, with the bowler having Anuj Dal (0) caught behind the very next ball.

With Derbyshire 0-2. du Plooy arrived at the crease, with his first boundary taking him to 1,000 runs across all formats in his first season with the club.

Along with Luis Reece (28), du Plooy steadied the innings, putting on 66 runs for the third wicket before the former was caught by Cameron Bancroft off Neser before lunch.

After seeing Alex Hughes (9) depart, du Plooy reached his half-century in 87 balls, nine of which resulted in boundaries, replicating the form which saw him hit a century against Australia A earlier this season.

Starc claimed all three of his wickets in a single over, having Matt Critchley (11) caught down the leg side, before bowling Alfie Gleadall (0) and Tony Palladino (0).

Hamidullah Qadri stayed in with du Plooy until tea, before the latter fell for 86 when he played a ball from Peter Siddle onto his stumps, as the hosts were dismissed for 172.

Harris brought up his half-century in 77 balls, including nine fours to end the day unbeaten on 52, while the captain, Khawaja, ended the day on 18 with Australia 77-0.
