Get off the mark this week with quick-fire stories to keep you up to date with the latest news from Derbyshire

Anuj Dal talks about Derbyshire’s loyal Members, Billy Godleman is selected in the MCC’s Legacy Tour squad and promising fast-bowler Michael Cohen joins the club.

Dal encouraged by Members’ support

Anuj Dal says that the close relationship between Derbyshire’s players and Members is what makes the club special, and he hopes to give them a year to celebrate in 2020.

The all-rounder featured in all three formats for the club last season, while he also played for the Second XI in a number of matches, and he says the support from Members was a big confidence boost for him in 2019.

“There are so many Members out there that support you non-stop,” Dal said.

“If you are having a bad time in the season and are quite low on confidence, it is nice to know that they will have your back no matter what.

“They support you all the way from Second XI cricket to the first team, the Members follow it all. It’s absolutely brilliant, and to be able to give back to them by doing well is really pleasing.

“It gives us so much satisfaction to know that we are doing well for the Members, and the club as a whole. You don’t always see that kind of loyalty and closeness at bigger clubs, because players are often seen to be bigger than the supporters, so to have a club with such a close-knit relationship is amazing.

“Hopefully we can welcome some new supporters in with our loyal Members, who have followed the club for years, and make it a really special year for them.”

Godleman named in MCC squad for Legacy Tour

Billy Godleman has been named in the MCC squad that will take part in the first ‘Legacy Tour’ of Nepal in November.

The Derbyshire captain is part of a strong 13-man squad, with two 50-over matches, one first-class match and three Twenty20 matches scheduled.

The tour began with a victory over Nepal Under 19s, in which Godleman struck 22, while the second match will see the MCC side take on Nepal in a 50-over match later today.

Derbyshire sign fast bowler Cohen

Derbyshire have signed promising fast bowler Michael Cohen on a two-year deal.

The 21-year-old has played 15 first-class matches in South Africa, where he has claimed 50 wickets at an average of 26.12.

Cohen, who qualifies for EU citizenship, played a key role for Western Province throughout the 2017-18 CSA Provincial Three-Day Challenge. He was the club’s leading wicket-taker with 26 dismissals in six matches, at an average of 19.15.

His four Twenty20 appearances have garnered as many wickets at an average of 24.50, while he has also featured in four List A matches.
