Sean Abbott picked up six wickets in three Big Bash games for the Sydney Sixers, as the competition got underway in Australia.

The international bowler, who will join Derbyshire for up to nine County Championship matches and the Vitality Blast group stage, struck once in his opening game against Perth Scorchers, before taking 3-20 against Hobart Hurricanes last week.

Abbott continued his good form over the weekend, claiming 2-42 and hitting 22 not out in a defeat to Brisbane Heat, meaning that the Sixers have won one of their three matches so far.

McDermott

Ben McDermott captained Hobart Hurricanes to victory in their first game of this year’s Big Bash, which saw them defeat Sydney Sixers at Alice Springs.

The wicketkeeper-batsman scored 15 as the Hurricanes made 129-9 from their 20 overs, before stumping Abbott for nought to reduce Sydney to 59-7.

Late hitting from Benjamin Manenti (22) helped get Sydney Sixers into three-figures, but they fell 26 runs short of their required total.

McDermott was dismissed five in his side’s second game, a defeat to Melbourne Stars over the weekend.

Critchley

Matt Critchley hit 42 in Fairfield-Liverpool’s defeat to UTS North Sydney in the NSW Premier Cricket – First Grade.

The all-rounder, who had already claimed 5-71 with the ball on Day One, put on a half-century second-wicket stand with captain Param Uppal (59).

Fairfield-Liverpool were dismissed for 285, as UTS North Sydney claimed a 40-run victory.

McKiernan

Mattie McKiernan took 1-18 and hit 22 in South Hobart Sandy Bay CC’s T20 defeat to Greater Northern.

McKiernan went for just 18 runs from his four overs, while bowling Jake Williams to dismiss the opener for five. The Derbyshire all-rounder also opened the batting and made 22, the second-highest score in the innings, as South Hobart Sandy Bay were all out for 109, losing by 23 runs.
