Alex Hughes insists Derbyshire will go into the 2020 Vitality Blast full of confidence after this season’s performance, and hopes they can once again perform in front of big crowds in Derby.
Hughes was a key player for the Falcons as they made it to Finals Day for the first time in the club’s history in 2019.
Much of that side remains, as does Twenty20 Head Coach Dominic Cork, while Australia internationals Sean Abbott and Ben McDermott have been added to the squad.
The 28-year-old says the aim is to once again challenge in the competition, and says that confidence is high within the squad.
“The confidence is definitely still there, but you know when you start a new competition everyone starts from zero,” said Hughes.
“It’s not a case of being over-confident, but I think what we did last year gave everyone a bit of belief and we want to recreate that.”
Last season saw record crowds attend T20 matches in Derbyshire, including back-to-back sell outs against Yorkshire Vikings and Notts Outlaws.
Hughes says that the support played a big part in the successful campaign, and hopes that can continue in 2020.
“It would be great to see the fans come out again and support us throughout the whole competition, because it gives us a boost,” he added.
“I think as you do better as a team, naturally the support grows a little bit. It does make a massive difference when every dot ball that we bowl, the crowd are on our side, every four we hit they are behind us.”
