Welch names squad for Essex clash

Graeme Welch has named a 14-man squad for the LV= County Championship fixture versus Essex at The 3aaa County Ground; starting on Wednesday at 10.30am. 

Tom Poynton, Scott Elstone, Tom Knight and Tom Taylor are all recalled to the squad, with Matthew Critchley and Harvey Hosein making way.

All-rounder Alex Hughes, however, is still unavailable due to injury and is expected to also miss the final game versus Leicestershire with a small fracture in his hand.

Opposition

Head Coach Paul Grayson recently left his position at Essex, departing the county by mutual consent after eight years at the helm. Assistant Chris Silverwood, a former England pace bowler, has taken over and is in temporary charge until the end of the season.

Essex, who currently sit in sixth place in Division Two, are led by former England wicketkeeper James Foster and boast three experienced internationals in their batting armoury in the shape of New Zealand’s Jesse Ryder, England’s Ravi Bopara and Holland’s Ryan ten Doeschate.

They also have two of the division’s standout performers this season at their disposal with opener Nick Browne, who has scored 953 runs at an average of 39.71, and young pace bowler Jamie Porter, who has claimed 46 wickets at an average of 25.89.
