Harvey Hosein and Mattie McKiernan led Derbyshire’s fightback on a difficult Day Two against Lancashire at Aigburth.

Hosein (44 not out) and McKiernan (19 not out) added 59 runs before the close of play in the Bob Willis Trophy fixture, as Derbyshire ended the day 210-7, trailing by 99.

Danny Lamb (3-35) and George Balderson (3-49) shared six wickets, while George Burrows also claimed a wicket in Liverpool.

Anuj Dal and Luis Reece claimed wickets early on the second morning to dismiss the hosts for 219 and earn maximum bowling points for Derbyshire.

However, a spell of 3-2 from Danny Lamb before lunch saw Derbyshire reduced to 17-4, with Matt Critchley and Fynn Hudson-Prentice charged with bringing some stability to the innings.

After rain brought about an early lunch, and a delayed start to the second session, the partnership of Critchley and Hudson-Prentice aimed to rebuild for the visitors, but they could only add 27 runs before the former was given out lbw for 14 to Balderson.

Hudson-Prentice (19) and Dal (2) fell in quick-succession, as Derbyshire went to tea on 71-7, needing Hosein and McKiernan to provide some strong resistance.

And they did just that, with both batsmen digging in and picking their moments to score in the evening session, as Hosein reached 44 with the final ball of the day.

He will resume on Day Three six runs short of his half-century, with McKiernan unbeaten on 19 and Derbyshire 120-7, still trailing by 99 and needing 80 runs to earn a batting point.
