Pre-Match Pack: Cardiff UCCE

A youthful Derbyshire squad will line up at The Incora™ County Ground to face Cardiff UCCE in a three-day friendly, starting on Saturday 3 April.

Alex Hughes is the most experienced member of the side, while fellow Cricket Derbyshire in partnership with the University of Derby graduate, Tom Wood, is expected to bat at the top of the order.

Also included in the squad are the likes of Mattie McKiernan, Dustin Melton and Nils Priestley, who will be looking to get some good time in the middle, ahead of the 2021 LV= County Championship season starting next week.

Ben Hutchinson will captain the side, which also contains youngsters Nafis Shaikh, Mitch Wagstaff, Archie Harrison, Chris Lawrence and Jonny Lawrence.

While Derbyshire have never faced Cardiff UCCE before, the club has a long history of facing University sides in both first-class and non-first-class encounters.

The Bank Holiday weekend fixture has not been classified as a first-class match, much like the 2016 clash against Durham University, which saw Wayne Madsen and Wes Durston each score exactly 100 before retiring not out.

Madsen has taken quite the liking to University sides, scoring 130 against Cambridge in 2015 and an unbeaten 80 against Loughborough in 2017.

While the experienced batsman won’t be at the crease for the Cardiff fixture, Alex Hughes will be, and he also has form against University sides, having scored 73 against Durham MCCU in 2013.

Due to current safety and capacity regulations, Derbyshire’s home fixture against Cardiff UCCE will be held behind closed doors. We urge supporters not to travel to The Incora County Ground.
