Derbyshire have named a 12-man squad for their LV= County Championship fixture against Warwickshire at The Incora County Ground.

Luis Reece returns to the side after a period of focussed rehabilitation on his knee, joining Billy Godleman, Wayne Madsen and Brooke Guest in the top order.

Ben McDermott will make his home debut for the club, having featured at New Road against Worcestershire last week, while Matt Critchley will be looking to replicate the performance that saw him score a half-century in each innings against Warwickshire earlier this season.

Anuj Dal and Alex Hughes are named in the squad, with Michael Cohen, Dustin Melton, Sam Conners and Ben Aitchison the fast bowling options.

New loan signing Alex Thomson is ineligible to feature against his parent club, while overseas quick Logan van Beek will join up with the squad prior to the start of the Vitality Blast next week.

Bite-sized Stats

This will be the 174th first class meeting between these two counties who first met in 1894 at Edgbaston when Derbyshire won by 10 wickets. Derbyshire’s first England Test cricketer, Bill Chatterton top-scored with 88 and George Walker took seven wickets in the match. Derbyshire have won 42 matches, losing 49, with 82 drawn of which one was abandoned without a ball being bowled – in 1907 at Derby.

Derbyshire’s biggest victory was by an innings and 250 runs at Derby in 1902 when Charles Ollivierre and Albert Lawton both made hundreds before Arnold Warren – 3-56 and 6-33 – bowled Warwickshire out twice for 219 and 92.

Pre-Match Talk

Head of Cricket, Dave Houghton, says Derbyshire are fighting hard to turn around their current run of form, and have not given up on success in any competition this season.

Derbyshire are currently bottom of Group One with three matches to play, starting with this week’s clash with high-flying Warwickshire, who sit third, just seven points off top spot.

Despite a spot in the third division seeming likely, Houghton says Derbyshire will fight until the very end and look to compete across all formats.

“We are still going to play every four day game trying to win it, if we are in the bottom division, we want to win that division,” he added.

“It’s important for our development that we win games of cricket, but we play three different formats, so if we can have a strong T20 or 50-over competition, that too would be good success.

“Every game is important, no matter the format, and we just need to build a bit of momentum. Hopefully from there, things go our way.”
