Luis Reece will miss the remainder of the season with a shoulder injury, with the all-rounder set to undergo surgery.

The 31-year-old will have left shoulder surgery due to a chronic condition that he has been managing and playing with the last couple of seasons. After an early season injection gave temporary relief to his symptoms, a second injection has not had a similar effect.

As a result, the player and Club have come to the decision that it is timely to have surgery now as not only is it hampering his performance but the predicted return to play is six to nine months and therefore intervention now increases the likelihood of an earlier return in 2022.

In addition to his shoulder there is a likelihood he will also have right knee surgery later in the winter for a problem that has worsened throughout the 2021 season.

The all-rounder has struggled in red ball cricket this season, but he was a key man during Derbyshire’s Vitality Blast campaign. His absence comes just as experienced batsman Wayne Madsen is set to return to first team action, which should help to fill the batting void left by Reece.

Head of Cricket, Dave Houghton, said: “Luis is carrying two or three injuries at the moment and he needs to get some work done on them.

“Our medical team are telling us it will take between six and nine months to recover, so we’ve taken the decision to let him get it done straight away, hopefully in the next week, so we should have him fit to play early next season.”
