Derbyshire have named a 14-man squad for their LV= County Championship fixture against Glamorgan at The Incora County Ground, starting tomorrow (11am).

Fresh from claiming their first win of the season against Leicestershire, Derbyshire will be looking to keep that momentum going against a strong Glamorgan side.

Shan Masood double centuries in each of his last two innings, equalling the world record, and the Pakistan opener will again be a key cog in a top-order capable of posting game-changing totals.

Mattie McKiernan scored his maiden first-class century last time out and he, along with all-rounders Alex Thomson and Anuj Dal, will be aiming to again make an impact with bat and ball.

Ryan Sidebottom returns to the squad after recovering from a hamstring injury picked up on the opening day of the season, he joins Suranga Lakmal, Sam Conners and Nick Potts as fast bowling options.

Injury News

George Scrimshaw is showing continued improvements with rehab from his side strain, Tom Wood and Ben Aitchison (spinal bone injury) remain out, with no return to play date currently stated.

The opposition

Glamorgan are currently fourth in the LV= County Championship Division Two table, their one win, one defeat and one draw to their name.

The euphoria of a convincing victory over table-toppers Nottinghamshire was quickly dispersed by a defeat to Middlesex in their last game, as star overseas player, and number-one ranked Test batter, Marnus Labuschagne, struggling against the pace of Shaheen Afridi.

Timm van der Gugten has been strong with bat and ball so far, claiming ten wickets at an average of 26.90, as well as scoring one half-century. Chris Cooke is Glamorgan’s leading run-scorer, with 181 runs at an average of 45.25 and two half-centuries.

Australian overseas duo, Labuschange and Michael Neser, are yet to truly shine for the Welsh county, but both are more than capable of causing trouble for any side in the LV= County Championship, and will be ones to watch out for this week.

Pre-Match Talk

Assistant Coach (Bowling Lead), Ajmal Shahzad, says Derbyshire increased performances with the bat has actually benefitted the squad’s bowlers, who now have more opportunity to defend good totals.

Last season, Derbyshire picked up just 18 batting bonus points in the whole campaign, with an average first innings score of just 218, which often left the bowlers with very few runs to defend.

This season, the side have already claimed 11 batting points, as well as eight bowling points, to sit in second place in Division Two after three games.

Shahzad praised the remarkable form of Shan Masood, who has scored 611 runs already, and said the increased volume of runs scored has given the whole team a boost, especially the bowling attack.

“The biggest game changer for me is the runs, last year we averaged around the 200 mark, it’s very difficult to bowl at a target like that,” he added.

“Everyone has benefitted from Shan’s runs, he’s breaking records every game, but you also see Wayne Madsen and players lower down the order benefitting from it, because it eases the pressure.

“The rate at which he scores is phenomenal, with the volume of runs and the way he scores them, for me, he’s one of the best in the world at this moment in time, everyone benefits from that, including our bowlers.”
