The Decision Review System will be in use during tonight’s Vitality Blast quarter-final between Derbyshire Falcons and Somerset, starting at 7pm.

Both Ball tracking and Ultra Edge will be in use for the first time in a Falcons’ game, as well as the standard runout stumping umpire reviews, which have have been available to umpires for all televised T20 fixtures.

DRS has been used in international cricket since 2008, becoming a key tool for a side’s tactical makeup.

Below is a quick explainer on the additional two elements of technology in use at Taunton this evening.

Ball Tracking

Ball Tracking is used when an lbw decision is reviewed. Due to the technology having a small margin for error, umpire’s call  can be ruled in close decisions, which gives the benefit of the doubt to the on-field decision, with the unsuccessful team keeping their review.

Ultra Edge

Ultra-Edge is used when reviewing whether a player has hit the ball, and this is mostly deployed for caught behind reviews.

Ultra-Edge works using a series of microphones around the stumps which show the sound produced on an oscilloscope. This is used in tandem with a front on and side on camera to determine if the sound has come from the bat hitting the ball.
