Pre-Match Pack: Nottinghamshire

Derbyshire have named a 13-man squad for their LV= County championship match up against Nottinghamshire at The Incora County Ground, starting on Tuesday 19th July at 11am.

In the absence of Billy Godleman, Leus du Plooy will captain the side against their East Midlands rivals, the first time he’s taken the mantle for Derbyshire in red ball cricket.

After making scores of 89 and 117 for the Second XI against Yorkshire last week, Harry Came is named in the squad, while du Plooy will be aiming to build on his centuries in each innings against Durham last time out.

Brooke Guest also reached three figures in the draw at Seat Unique Riverside, with Hilton Cartwright and Anuj Dal also passing 50.

Ben Aitchison made his return to first-class cricket last week, and he continues as a seam option alongside Sam Conners, Nick Potts, Luis Reece and George Scrimshaw, who made his England Lions debut against South Africa on Thursday.

The Opposition 

Nottinghamshire are currently top of the LV= County Championship Division Two, with five wins and three draws from their nine games so far.

Seamer, Dan Paterson, has followed up an impressive debut season in English cricket with another strong showing, taking 33 County Championship wickets at an average of 22.72.

With the bat, Ben Duckett has led the way for Nottinghamshire, scoring 764 runs while averaging just under 70. His recent England Lions call-up, alongside Derbyshire’s Scrimshaw, a reward for his fine form.

Pre-Match Talk

Mickey Arthur says Derbyshire’s progress in the red ball arena is clear to see, after another positive showing against Durham. 

Derbyshire fell narrowly short of victory on Day Four, but centuries in each innings from Leus du Plooy, a century for Brooke Guest and 90 from Anuj Dal were the highlights with the bat, while the bowlers shared the wickets throughout.

So far in the LV= County Championship, Derbyshire have regularly been in strong positions late in games, and while Arthur says the next stage of the team’s evolution will be winning games, the Head of Cricket is pleased with the development he’s seen since his appointment.

“We just fell a little bit short. I can’t fault the effort, I thought that our effort was outstanding. It went according to plan because we wanted a couple of overs with the second new ball.

“In hindsight we could have used a bit more, but once bitten after our experience against Sussex. We couldn’t have done anything more today. I thought the guys executed the plans well, it was just tough to get 10 wickets.

“We fought really hard and we can be very proud of our performance. I thought we got the declaration right. Irrespective of the result, this has been the fifth game when we’ve been in command on the final day.

“We’ve got over the line on a couple of occasions. We’ve been calling the shots and that for me is progress, and when I see that progress I get quite excited because it’s more game time and experience into our younger players. It makes them better in the future and that’s what I have my eye on.”
