Wayne Madsen scored 150 to put Derbyshire in the ascendancy on Day Two of the Specsavers County Championship match at Bristol, before Gloucestershire’s batsmen fought back in the evening session.
The 32-year-old shared a record seventh-wicket stand for Derbyshire versus Gloucestershire of 128 with Tom Poynton – who scored 53 – as the visitors were bowled out for 444 in their first innings.
In reply, the opening pair of Cameron Bancroft and Chris Dent put on 102, almost batting through to the close, before the former was bowled by Shiv Thakor for 41, as the hosts ended the day on 110-1, trailing by 334.
Derbyshire’s unbeaten overnight batsmen Madsen and Neil Broom begun the day on 58 and 30, respectively, but the latter could only add two to his score before being caught in the slips.
Wes Durston (12) and Thakor (7) then fell in quick succession as Gloucestershire enjoyed the better of the first hour of Day Two.
That brought Poynton to the crease to join Madsen and the pair dug in to defy the hosts attack and bat until lunch, at which time the visitors were 319-6.
Upon resumption, Madsen and Poynton began to play more attacking strokes and Madsen eventually reached his hundred from 276 balls to become the county’s first centurion of the new campaign and begin his season in perfect fashion.

Poynton also made sure he enjoyed a great start to the 2016 season, as he went through to his half-century from 127 balls with seven fours before getting out on 53 to end a 128-run partnership with Madsen.
Madsen was to go on and score 150 in his first innings of the season, before being stumped last man out, having faced 329 deliveries in an innings that lasted more than seven hours.
Meanwhile, Luke Fletcher and Ben Cotton both hit 11, whilst Andy Carter finished seven not out on his first-class Derbyshire debut, as Graeme Welch’s men scored 444 in their first innings.
Gloucestershire openers Bancroft and Dent batted well to keep the Derbyshire seamers at bay and put on a century partnership for the first wicket, before Bancroft tried one leave too many and was bowled by Thakor on 41.
At the close of play, Gloucestershire were 110-1 with Dent unbeaten on 61 and nightwatchman Liam Norwell on two not out.
