Derbyshire begin their Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign with a visit to the delightful Cheltenham College Grounds where they will face Gloucestershire for the first time in a one-day game there since 1997.
Heritage Officer David Griffin previews the match.
These two counties have met 45 times in List A cricket although two of the matches were abandoned, at Derby in 1982 and at Chesterfield in 1998. Derbyshire have won 27 games, Gloucestershire 16, while there has never been a ‘No Result’ between these two sides.
There have been some very close games between these two counties in one day cricket including the one wicket win by Gloucestershire in the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy semi-final at Bristol in 2003 on a scorching hot day in front of a capacity crowd, and the John Player League match on the same ground in 1983 when Bob Taylor – not known for hitting sixes – deposited the penultimate ball of the game over the mid-wicket boundary to seal a three wicket win.
At Cheltenham, Derbyshire secured comfortable wins in 1989, 1991, and 1993 but were defeated by seven wickets most recently, in 1997.
Derbyshire’s highest team total came in the Duckworth Lewis defeat at Bristol in 2015 when Hamish Rutherford (110) and Wayne Madsen (106 not out) were the main contributors to their 274 for five.
Gloucestershire’s record of 292 for eight was also at Bristol in 2002.
Kim Barnett scored three one day hundreds against the county he would eventually join after 20 seasons with Derbyshire while Dean Jones and John Morris also made hundreds in addition to those scored by the Madsen and Rutherford.
Unsurprisingly, Derbyshire’s record partnership came during the game at Bristol in 2015 when Madsen and Rutherford added 182 for the third wicket.
Five Derbyshire bowlers have taken five wickets in an innings against Gloucestershire, Eddie Barlow topping the list with a magnificent match-winning six for 33 in a Benson and Hedges Cup game at Bristol in 1978; Kevin Dean, Phil Russell, Graeme Welch, and Chris Wilkins were the others to take five.
