Pre-Match Pack: Sussex Sharks (H)

Derbyshire have named a 14-player squad for their opening Metro Bank One Day Cup fixture against Sussex Sharks at The Incora County Ground, starting tomorrow (11am).

Batter, David Lloyd, returns to the squad having been unable to play against his parent Club, Glamorgan, while Luis Reece, Harry Came and Haider Ali will all be looking to build on strong starts with the bat. The top-order trio have scored a combined 377 runs in the opening two games.

Pathway youngster, Harry Moore, is named in the squad after a string of impressive showings in Academy games, the Second XI and for the Midlands at the recent ECB Super Fours.

The Opposition

Sussex Sharks are chasing their first win of the competition, having been defeated by Durham and Northamptonshire in their opening two fixtures. 

India batter, Chateshwar Pujara, scored a century against Northants on Sunday and will be looking to build on his impressive form in English cricket so far.

With the ball, Jack Carson leads the way with six wickets, while fast bowlers, Henry Crocombe and Brad Currie, have combined for seven dismissals.

Pre-Match Talk

Opener Harry Came says making the most of the moments when Derbyshire are on top in games will be key if they are to turn their Metro Bank One Day Cup form around. 

Derbyshire have made strong starts to each of their two 50-over games, with Came and opening partner, Luis Reece, putting on stands of 71 and 134, while Haider Ali has also scored two half-centuries batting in the top order.

However, quick wickets in the middle order has seen Derbyshire score 298 in each innings, when they had looked on track for north of 310, while wickets for the Derbyshire attack have been at a premium.

Came says the squad must be more ruthless when the momentum is with them, and hopes to see that mindset shift starting with Wednesday’s game against Sussex Sharks.

“I think we were about 30 short, especially being two down for nearly 200 we would have liked to have got at least 330 from there,” he said.

“Hopefully for Wednesday we will have learned our lessons and come back and put plenty of runs on the board.

“At 100-2 we were right in the game but they didn’t have to take too many risks and they had a few soft balls which got them away which was very frustrating for us and that’s something we are going to look to put right.”
