Derbyshire travel to the northeast for their the third time this season, to face Durham in a Metro Bank Once Day Cup match at Chester-le-Street.

Heritage Officer David Griffin previews the match.

Uniquely, Durham is the only county to have beaten Derbyshire in a one-day match as a minor county and a first-class county.

Seven years before they were admitted to the first-class ranks, Durham beat Derbyshire by seven wickets in a NatWest Trophy game at Derby. Derbyshire were at full strength with a side which included Kim Barnett, John Morris, Geoff Miller, Michael Holding, Allan Warner and Ole Mortensen, but were easily beaten with more than four overs to spare.

John Lister, an opener who had played ten matches for Derbyshire between 1978 and 1979, scored 42 for Durham who never really looked in any danger of losing.

In 1992, when the sides next met, both were first class counties and Derbyshire exacted revenge with a thumping win in a Benson and Hedges Cup group game, posting 281 for nine at Jesmond and winning by 80 runs. John Morris scored a memorable 121 with 11 fours and four sixes.

Derbyshire have won 16 of these encounters, the closest by one run in a Friends Provident game at Derby in 2008, while Durham have won 22 with one no result and one abandoned match, at Chester-le-Street in 2003.

Derbyshire’s highest innings total remains the 281 for nine at Jesmond; Durham best is 298 for seven at Chester-le-Street in 2008 which gave them a 117-run win.

Five Derbyshire players have scored hundreds against Durham, Matthew Cassar leading the way with 126 at Derby in 2000. The other centurions are Chris Adams, Morris, Ben Slater, and Chris Taylor.

There have been eight partnerships worth a hundred runs or more for Derbyshire in these contests, the highest of which was when Chris Adams added 135 with Dean Jones for the third wicket at Chesterfield in 1996. However, Derbyshire have never managed a century partnership at Chester-le-Street in one day cricket, their two three figure pairings in Durham both occurring at Darlington and both involving Tim O’Gorman.

Just two players have taken five wickets in an innings in these games, Dominic Cork with the best figures of five for 43 at Darlington in 1994, and Rob Bailey, who took five for 45 at Chester-le-Street in 2000.
