Falcons face Vikings at Queen's Park

Saturday 11th June 2016
Written by Danny Painter

Derbyshire Falcons welcome Yorkshire Vikings to Queen’s Park, Chesterfield, looking to claim their third straight win to start the Royal London One-Day Cup.

Two games into the competition, the Falcons sit top of their group after comprehensive victories over Worcestershire Rapids and Durham, both by seven wickets.

In Tuesday’s win against Durham, Ben Slater (119) led the way with the bat hitting his maiden List A century as the Falcons successfully chased down 216 – after an bowling performance from the hosts. Andy Carter (3-59) and Shiv Thakor (3-36) took three wickets apiece, whilst Ben Cotton (2-32) and Matt Critchley (2-53) also chipped in with vital wickets.

Stand-in Captain Alex Hughes, who will continue to lead the side in the absence of Wes Durston through injury, is hoping that his team can continue their great run of form in the competition.

Hughes said: “We all know it’ll be a really tough game. They have match winners right the way through the team. But when you’re playing good cricket, none of that seems to matter as long as you focus on your own game and do what we do well.

“We’ll enjoy the day as it’s always a great day at Chesterfield and we will be looking to beat them as we did last year in the NatWest T20 Blast.”

Opposition

The Vikings will be hoping the introduction of New Zealand Captain Kane Williamson will help improve a slow start to their white-ball campaign.

The County Champions have shown strong form in red-ball cricket, but sit bottom of the North Group in both the NatWest T20 Blast and Royal London One-Day Cup, having failed to claim victory in either format so far.

Director of Cricket, Martyn Moxon said: “Our defeat to Worcestershire showed that there isn’t that confidence there. We are hoping rather than expecting, that’s how I would put it. Batsmen are just not in their best form. There is a bit of a fear of getting out as opposed to going and scoring runs.”

Yorkshire Vikings squad: Ballance, Bresnan, Carver, Coad, Hodd, Leaning, Lees (captain), Lyth, Patterson, Plunkett, Rashid, Rhodes, Willey, Williamson.
