Derbyshire have named a 13-player squad for their final LV= County Championship fixture of the season against Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens, starting tomorrow (10.30am).

Wayne Madsen is ruled out of the fixture due to a finger injury, but the in-form opening pair of Luis Reece and Harry Came will be looking to end the campaign on a high in Cardiff.

Zak Chappell and Sam Conners each claimed four wickets in the first innings of the rain-affected game against Sussex, they are named in the squad alongside fellow seamers, Pat Brown, Nick Potts, Reece and Anuj Dal.

The Opposition

Glamorgan will still have one eye on third place, as they head into the final red ball game of the campaign.

Kiran Carlson has been Glamorgan’s leading light with the bat, scoring 1028 at an average of 48.95, including four centuries and five half-centuries, while Timm van der Gugten’s 38 wickets puts him at least nine clear of any other bowler for the county this season.

Pre-Match Talk

Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, believes Derbyshire could have picked up a victory in the game against Sussex, had the weather not reduced the game to less than two days of play.

Derbyshire bowled the visitors out for just 100 in the first innings, having been made to wait until Day Three to begin the game due to heavy rain, before declaring with a lead of 129 on the final morning.

However, more rain halted Derbyshire’s progress with the ball and eventually put paid to the match, meaning they will end the campaign without a home win in red ball cricket.

Athur was frustrated to be denied a positive result, but says there’s clear progress being made by the players, as evidenced by their last two performances.

“We have been in good positions three times in games this season and the rain has come which kind of sums up the year really.

“But I was really happy with the skills again, the way the guys are playing has shown a real development, they are getting better and better and I can’t fault them in any way, every day they bring attitude, intensity and our dressing room is a really good place to be at the minute.

“We had two options really, declare overnight which was the real rogue option and we spoke about that, to use the early morning conditions and give it another crack and chase whatever we had to or do we try and give them a little bit of scoreboard pressure and that was the route we went which I think was probably the best one.”
