Unchanged squad for Festival opener

Saturday 2nd July 2016
Written by Danny Painter

Derbyshire Falcons have named an unchanged squad for the Custom Solar Chesterfield Festival of Cricket opener against Northants Steelbacks in the NatWest T20 Blast on  Sunday 3 July; 2.30pm start.

The Falcons enter the fixture following an impressive seven-wicket win over Worcestershire Rapids at New Road on Friday. It was a career-best night for Alex Hughes who returned 3-23, while Wayne Madsen (59*) and Chesney Hughes (43*) shared a match-winning 97-run stand.

Wes Durston’s side now welcome the leaders of the North Group to the picturesque Queen’s Park for the start of the week-long Custom Solar Chesterfield Festival of Cricket, in association with Chesterfield Borough Council.

Harvey Hosein, who plays club cricket at Chesterfield, retains his place behind the stumps, while Wes Durston will once again lead the Falcons after returning from injury on Friday night.

Madsen said: “It was a good night for us on Friday – it’s always nice to have a chase like that. We now need to back this up on Sunday now. Obviously Northants are flying at the top of the table so it’s a very important game for us.

“We need to back up the performances but we will take a lot of confidence from the way we played. Both with the ball and with the bat.”

Opposition

Northants Steelbacks currently sit top of the North Group with six wins from eight games and enter this weekend’s clash after a comprehensive victory over Birmingham Bears on Friday night.

Steelbacks captain Alex Wakely said:”It was pretty much the perfect game for us. I thought last week was the first time we had managed to string it all together, bowing well, batting well and fielding well, and today we carried that on.

“Early wickets in Twenty20 are key. It’s very hard to claw it back once you lose two or three quick wickets but it was the way we then carried it on that was so impressive for me.

“Bowling-wise we actually has a few new tricks up our sleeve that we were going to try today but when we got a couple of early wickets we kept it the same.”

Northants squad: To be announced.
