Get off the mark this week with quick-fire stories to keep you up to date with the latest news from Derbyshire.

Dominic Cork commits to Derbyshire for the 2020 Vitality Blast, Dave Houghton says the current squad can create a legacy and you can still give the gift of cricket this Christmas.

Cork commits for 2020

Twenty20 Head Coach, Dominic Cork, has signed a new deal with the club for the 2020 season.

Cork led the Falcons during their 2019 Vitality Blast campaign, which saw Derbyshire reach Finals Day for the first time, facing Essex in the semi-final at Edgbaston.

Now the former Derbyshire and England fast bowler will once again work with the side during 2020, and he is aiming to build on the foundations laid this year.

“This club has always had young talent, at times we have not been able to keep it so that is really impressive that we still have the bulk of the squad together,” said Cork.

“Throw in two very good overseas signings in Sean Abbott and Ben McDermott, and we as a squad have to push on from here.

“It is alright saying how good last season was, but now it’s about whether we can do it again, for a second year?, can we reach quarter-finals and Finals Day? Business has still got to be done. I have been brought in for success, and I want to win the competition .

“It’s not going to be easy, there will be sides out there that are thinking ‘hang on, we probably didn’t look at Derbyshire as the strength that they had’ so they will be coming at us harder than they did last year and the squad will have to be up for it.”

Houghton says squad can create a legacy

Head of Cricket, Dave Houghton, wants to give supporters a memorable year in 2020, and believes the current squad are good enough to sustain success long-term.

As the club prepares to celebrate its 150th anniversary, Houghton says the team will be spurred on to challenge in all formats, something that he believes they can do for years to come.

“Knowing that it’s the 150th year is a good enough reason to do it (challenge for silverware),” said Houghton.

“But the conversations we have had in the dressing room, without even looking at the 150th anniversary, are that the team we have representing our club is capable of challenging for trophies.

“So, we can have a nice five years, play nice cricket and put no trophies in the cabinet, or we can leave a legacy.”
