With more than 3,200 wickets between our three spin-bowling candidates, who will make it into your Greatest XI?

Tommy Mitchell (1928-1939)

Key stats: 1,417 wickets, 115 five-wicket hauls, five England caps.

Mitchell claimed 1,417 wickets for Derbyshire during his time with the club, taking 100 wickets or more in ten seasons and 115 five-wicket hauls. The England international’s best figures were 10-64, and he was part of the side that won the 1936 County Championship.

Albert ‘Dusty’ Rhodes (1937-1954)

Keys stats: 642 wickets, 29 five-wicket hauls.

‘Dusty’ Rhodes took five wickets or more in an innings 29 times on his way to 642 wickets for Derbyshire. His best bowling figures were 8-162, while he claimed 100 wickets in a season once.

Edwin Smith (1951-1971)

Key stats: 1,211 wickets, 51 five-wicket hauls.

Smith took 1,211 wickets for Derbyshire across a two-decade spell with the club, including 51 five-wicket hauls and best figures of 9-46. He also took 100 wickets in a season once.

Heritage Officer and Statistician, David Griffin explains the process and the criteria for selection.

The structure of the XI is based on historical selection to ensure there is depth in batting, pace and spin bowling. Only one overseas player permitted, with the overseas player that receives the most votes being selected for the overall XI.

The 40 nominees have been selected based on their playing records for Derbyshire with a minimum of five seasons’ service. All statistical information given includes the individual’s performances in all formats of the game – first-class, List A and Twenty20 – up until the end of the 2019 season.

The candidates are listed in alphabetical order and all relevant statistical information is provided to assist with your decision-making.
