Together, we are all Derbyshire: Daryn Smit

To celebrate the 150th year of Derbyshire County Cricket Club,  we sit down with players, staff, legends and Members to find out just what the club means to them.

Daryn Smit joined Derbyshire in 2017, after scoring more 4,607 first-class runs for Dolphins in South Africa, between 2005 and 2016.

The former wicketkeeper-batsman was an ever-present part of the Falcons side that made it to Finals Day for the first time in 2019, before retiring from playing to become the club’s Head of Talent Pathway ahead of the new season.

Smit says the support of the Derbyshire fans at Finals Day is a memory he will keep forever, and believes they will be behind the side again in 2020.

“Finals Day was fantastic, to see that corner of Edgbaston full of our fans cheering us on was brilliant.

“Even though we lost, when we walked back to the changing rooms they were on their feet cheering us off, almost appreciating that it had been a really good campaign.

“For us, as players, it’s absolutely huge. When we sit here now, in early March, things like that excite you for the start of the summer, knowing that we are going to see the usual suspects sitting around the boundary in a month’s time.”
